What prep courses for construction do you offer?
Prep courses for Florida State Certified General, Building and Residential contractors.
In what formats do you offer the course?
Our course is in three (3) parts. Highlighting and audio exercises of all the books and a 4-day workshop which can be taken unlimited times. Two (2) days of Business & Finance and two (2) days of the Trade section (contract administration & project management).
How and when are the workshops given?
Workshops are given almost every Saturday.
The class is given live from the Sarasota classroom, usually on Saturdays, via ZOOM meeting at the same time for viewers at home.
How do I get a contractor license?
Several steps are required: (1) Register with the Florida Contractor Industry Licensing Board (CILB) via Professional Testing; (2) take our prep course and follow the instructions and pass the (3) state exams with Pearson Vue, then activate your license with the CILB.
How long does it take to get through all the material?
You’re going to have a minimum of 50-60 hours of study time in addition to workshop attendance.
How long is my tuition good for?
What days and times are the preps/workshops given?
Once a week, when scheduled, usually on a Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Is the state exam open book?
Yes. Certain books can be taken into the exam site which will be explained in the course.
Do you accept all major debit and credit cards?
What makes your course different from others I see?
With our course, you are going to know where to find the answers in the books, and ALSO, we believe that memorizing certain things will give you more time, to look up for the more difficult questions.
Do you highlight and tab your books?
No. We instruct you as to where and how to do it along the way. We believe this helps you know the material and know better where it is located in the books than if we did it for you.
How many exams are there with the general, building and residential licenses?
Three (3): Business and Finance, Project Management and Contract Administration (the trade exams).
How many questions are on the Business and Finance exam?
How many questions are on the other two exams?
Remember…Business and Finance is always (120). The other two (2) trade exams, project management & contract administration differ as to the license being tested for. General Contractor is (60) questions on each trade exam. Building Contractor is (50) questions on each trade exam. Residential Contractor is (45) questions on each trade exam.

Do I really need a contractor license if I am just doing home improvement work?
Probably yes. If it is over one thousand dollars ($1000), you must be licensed. Florida is tough on violators, as you may be aware of.
Do I need all of the state required books for the exams?
We will instruct you as to which books are necessary for the state exams, and which ones you can take into the testing site.

No. Unfortunately, this is personalized, strictly guarded and only for you.
How do I get started once I feel I can qualify as a contractor?
Register for our prep course, pick up your books at our Sarasota location (or have them delivered), register with the (CILB) Construction Industry Licensing Board, and when ready, take the state exam.
How often are the state exams given?
Exams for the three different contractor (general, building and residential) exams are given at Pearson Vue six (6) days a week from 8 am to 3:30 pm EST. The exams are all Computer Based Training (CBT).
Will we know what books we can take into the exam?
Yes. You will be instructed as to the ones allowed or not allowed in the exam.
Once I pass the exam, how long can I wait to apply for my license?
Your exam grade is good for four (4) years.
Do I need all of my experience before I take the state exam?
No. You have four (4) years to get this done, after your pass.
What is the difference between General, Building and Residential contractors?
Basically, General is unlimited building. A Building contractor can build up to three (3) stories of commercial or residential . A Residential contractor can build up to two (2) stories, residential only.
Can I purchase the prep courses separately?
Yes. Each module (Business and Finance, the Trade Sections, and Project Management and Contract Administration) can be purchased separately.
Do you offer the courses in Spanish?
What score do I need to pass the state exam?
You need a 70% or better score for each type of exam.
If I fail one part of the three exams, do I have to retake all of them again?
No. You will retake only the part you failed.
After I get licensed, will I have to complete continuing education?
Yes. 14 hours of approved continuing education is required every two (2) years, ending on August 31 of even numbered years (2024, 2026, etc).
